Born in 1932 in Leeds, of Scottish parentage, Ian Weatherhead was educated initially in Yorkshire and finally in Scotland. Whilst in Edinburgh, he was a pupil of “Willie” Wilson, ARSA, the Scottish stained glass artist, printmaker and water-colourist, whose influence remains strong. At university in London he studied architecture and practiced until the end of the 80s, since then he has devoted himself fully to painting. In 1991 Ian Weatherhead received the Catto Gallery award at the Royal Watercolour Society. His paintings are in many public and private collections both here and abroad, including the House of Commons. Ian Weatherhead’s paintings are more often than not architecturally based and combine an enjoyment of colour, a love of draughtsmanship and a desire to draw the viewer into a balanced composition. His aim is to inform the viewer of all the elements that have served to inspire the subject and feels strongly that one should be as aware of those items not directly seen, as those that are in the picture. Recent works show the increasingly strong influence of light on his subjects and many have a marked anecdotal content.
