Born in 1945 in Wiltshire, Carol Sproston has lived most of her life there. When she first began painting she studied at the Lydgate Art Research Centre and subsequently with the artist and teacher, Graham Sproston. In the last few years she has exhibited regularly, both in Wiltshire and London. Her paintings display great sensitivity and quality of mark and colour. From a purely abstract beginning with random strokes of colour, line and occasional scratched areas, the composition and mood gradually unfolds and evolves. The structure of the painting is then further enhanced and built up with layers of opaque and translucent paint. The search for imagery comes from the painting process as the form changes and is then re-established. Although Carol’s paintings have titles, they remain open to interpretation.
