Born in 1955 in Norwich, the son of artist and art dealer Joseph Fairhurst, Miles studied briefly in Aix-en-Provence, France and under his father, but is largely self-taught. His main influences are the great East Anglian artists, such as the Norwich School of 19th Century and Seago, Munnings and Arnesby-Brown from the 20th Century. These artists were principally concerned with the effects of light and the atmosphere of the subject, something Miles strives to emulate in his own work; the actual subject matter often taking second place to the impact of the painting. In his paintings he portrays his great love of the East Anglian landscape; the broad skies and the wild places, mile upon mile of almost deserted beaches and marshland which are such an inspiration and complement his impressionistic handling of the subject. Miles work has been exhibited in London, Yorkshire, the Cotswolds, Hampshire and East Anglia; his first major exhibition being in 1992 at the Park Grosvenor Galleries in London. Miles is a member of the Suffolk Coastal Group of artists and currently exhibits at several galleries in East Anglia and his work has been shown regularly at The Royal Society of Marine Artists annual exhibition. He returned to East Anglia in the late 1980s to concentrate on painting and currently lives in Suffolk. Miles also produces dvds on the work and techniques of Edward Seago. He has many paintings in private collections in Britain, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the USA. The Wykeham Gallery first exhibited Miles Fairhurst’s work many years ago and we are delighted to welcome him back. |
