About Gareth Parry
Gareth Parry was born in the slate quarrying town of Blaenau Ffestiniog, North Wales, in 1951. Gareth Parry, artist, studied at the Manchester College of Art in the late 1960s. After a brief period working in a local mine, he returned to painting, initially focusing on private commissions and "anything to make a living by the brush".
In 1980, he chose to concentrate on exhibitions, embracing what he describes as "doing what I like". For many years, he painted en plein air, an experience he calls "the best training I could ever have had", before transitioning to studio work based on sketches and memory, which he regards as "the companion of observation".
Style and Inspiration
Gareth Parry paintings are celebrated for their expressive and energetic qualities. His work primarily captures "Cymru" and "Y Cymry" (land and the people), reflecting his deep connection to Wales. Parry’s style blends elements of impressionism, emphasising mood and effect over precise representation.
His Welsh landscape paintings and figurative works are inspired by natural elements such as weather and changing light, as well as societal changes in Wales. The people paintings often convey Parry’s own reflections on a changing country, while his landscapes and seascapes prioritise the energy and character of the natural world.
Media and Technique
Gareth Parry is renowned for his palette knife painting technique. By allowing the paint to "do the work", he achieves dynamic textures, light, and movement in his contemporary Welsh art. Though he spent years painting outdoors, he now works primarily in his studio, developing pieces from sketches and memory. This approach allows Parry to combine direct observation with expressive interpretation, creating paintings that radiate freedom and vitality.
Awards and Recognition
Gareth Parry has exhibited extensively in both London and Wales, and his work is held in public and private collections across the UK and internationally. In 2006, he was elected a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy, marking him as a distinguished Royal Cambrian Academy artist. This affiliation highlights his stature within the Welsh and British art communities.
