Mary Burtenshaw was born in 1972 in London, where she currently lives. She studied Fine Art at the Norwich School of Art and Design, graduating with a Fine Art BA (Hons) in 1994. She currently combines her passion for painting with a career in publishing and has created and illustrated several children’s books.
After several years of not painting she has recently returned to her first love, using pastels to create evocative landscapes which are at the same time both strong and gentle. She paints dramatic impressionist and abstract pastel landscapes which, inspired by her love of the countryside and the many places she has visited, create atmosphere and feeling through her use of texture and light.
Her landscapes are in soft pastels on watercolour paper. This gives Mary’s work an intensity not only of colour and texture but the soft contours help translate the space and changing mood of her subject matter.
Mary continues to explore her medium as well as having been greatly influenced by many different artists and her grandfather, Geo Ray Burtenshaw, also a landscape artist.
